Where Is the Best Injection Site for Wegovy?

The label answers it in one sentence, and it grants more flexibility than most Wegovy guides admit. Here is what you may change freely, and the one rule that does not bend.

Most pages ranking for this question list the same three sites and stop. Several of the strongest ones are written for the UK market, which is a problem if you are holding a US prescription. And none of them mentions what is genuinely useful about the Wegovy label: it is unusually explicit about what you are allowed to vary, and it permits something the tirzepatide labels do not.

Three things the Wegovy label lets you change

Flexibility granted by the WEGOVY US prescribing information, read 30 September 2026.
What you may varyWhat the label saysAny dose change needed?
The injection site "Inject WEGOVY subcutaneously in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. The time of day and the injection site can be changed without the need for a dosage modification." No
The time of day "at any time of day, with or without meals" No
The day of the week "If you need to change the day of the week, you may do so as long as your last dose of WEGOVY was given 2 or more days before." No, subject to that 2 day gap
Whether you rotate "Rotate injection sites with each dose." "Change (rotate) your injection site with each injection. Do not use the same site for each injection." Not a choice. This one is an instruction.

Read together, those lines say something simple. The geography of the injection is yours. The repetition of it is not.

Coming from Zepbound or Mounjaro? You gain a site

This is the one practical difference nobody writing about Wegovy sites seems to mention, and it matters if you have switched.

The two tirzepatide labels do not treat the three areas equally. Zepbound reads: "Inject ZEPBOUND subcutaneously in the abdomen, thigh, or another person should inject in the back of the upper arm." Mounjaro reads: "Inject subcutaneously in the abdomen, thigh, or have another person inject in the back of the upper arm." In both, the upper arm is described as a site somebody else uses on you.

Wegovy carries no such restriction. Its own patient instructions say plainly that Wegovy "is injected under the skin (subcutaneously) of your stomach (abdomen), thigh, or upper arm", with no second person attached.

The practical effect: a self-injector moving from tirzepatide to Wegovy goes from two areas to three. If you were running a rotation built on two, you now have room to spread it wider, which is the whole point of rotating. Our comparison of all four labels sets the exact wording side by side.

One caveat on the upper arm

Not restricted is not the same as easy. It is the one area you cannot see while injecting and cannot reach without twisting, and the Wegovy label separately notes that the FlexTouch pen is not recommended for self-injection by people who are blind or visually impaired. If reaching it means contorting, that is a reason to have someone else do it or to leave it out of your rotation, not a rule.

Why the site cannot change your results

Semaglutide has an absolute bioavailability of 89% and reaches maximum concentration 1 to 3 days after the dose. It is a once-weekly drug whose peak arrives a day or more later and which clears over a matter of weeks at steady state.

Nothing on that timescale is sensitive to which patch of subcutaneous fat the dose started from, which is exactly why the label is comfortable telling you to change the site without changing the dose. The idea that the abdomen absorbs better is true for rapid-acting insulin, where minutes matter. It has been copied onto GLP-1 pages where it does not apply.

Picking a site, in order

  1. Abdomen is the usual default: easiest to see, easiest to reach, and generally the deepest subcutaneous layer. Stay at least 2 inches clear of the navel and off the waistband line, where clothing will rub a fresh site all day.
  2. Front of the thigh, middle third between hip and knee. Avoid the inner thigh, which is thinner and more tender.
  3. Upper arm, the back or outer part. Permitted on Wegovy for self-injection, but only worth using if you can reach it without strain.
  4. Whichever you land on, skip any spot that is currently bruised, tender, hard, lumpy or broken, and take the next one instead.

The rotation, which is the part that actually matters

"Rotate with each dose" means a different spot every week, not a different area. The Wegovy patient instructions allow you to stay in one area as long as the spot inside it moves.

With all three areas open to you, a straightforward cycle is six spots: upper left and lower left abdomen, upper right and lower right abdomen, left thigh, right thigh, adding the two upper arms if someone can help or you can reach comfortably. At one dose a week, six spots means roughly a month and a half before any spot repeats, and eight means two months.

The failure is never the choice of area. It is forgetting. By week six, "somewhere on the left, probably" has collapsed a six spot cycle into the two easiest, and those are the ones that start to sting and to lump. That is the narrow problem a log solves: Jabby records each dose against a body map and proposes the next spot, so the cycle stays the length you designed it to be. If you are weighing up tools for this, our GLP-1 app comparison covers what matters.

Frequently asked questions

Is the stomach the best place to inject Wegovy?

It is the most convenient for most people, not the most effective. The label states that the injection site can be changed without any dosage modification, and section 12.3 reports similar exposure across abdomen, thigh and upper arm.

Can I inject Wegovy in my arm myself?

The Wegovy label lists the upper arm without restricting it to another person, unlike the Zepbound and Mounjaro labels. Whether it is practical for you is a separate question, and worth raising with your prescriber if you are unsure.

How far from the belly button should I inject Wegovy?

At least 2 inches. This is standard subcutaneous practice across the GLP-1 pens and appears in the manufacturers' Instructions for Use.

Do I have to inject Wegovy at the same time each week?

No. The label allows any time of day, with or without meals, and allows the time of day to change without a dosage modification. The day of the week can also be moved provided your last dose was 2 or more days earlier.

Does changing the injection site mean changing the dose?

No, and the label says so in those words.

Should I rotate between areas or within one area?

Either satisfies the instruction. What is not permitted is using the same site every time. Spreading across more spots gives each one longer to recover.

What if I inject into a spot that is still bruised?

Avoid it. Injecting into skin that is bruised, tender, hardened or broken is advised against, and it is the most reliable way to turn a one-off mark into a recurring one.
